Katie's Story
Katie Villa was born into horses. Not figuratively — literally. Before she could walk, she was being held in the saddle. Before she could read, she knew the difference between a trot and a lope. By the time she was old enough for school, she'd already spent more hours in a barn than most adults spend in a lifetime.
Now at 14, Katie is a competitive barrel racer with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from thousands of hours of real work. Not the kind of work you see on Instagram — the 5:30 AM kind. The muck-the-stalls-before-school kind. The ride-in-the-rain-because-the-horse-doesn't-care-about-weather kind.
"People ask me what I want to be when I grow up. I already am what I want to be. I'm a barrel racer. Everything else is just details."
— Katie Villa, age 14
She trains with four barrel horses on our family farm in Cullman County — each one different, each one teaching her something new. There's the veteran who teaches patience, the young one who teaches timing, the athlete who teaches speed, and the one who teaches her that some days you just have to trust the process.
And then there's Dexter the donkey. Dexter doesn't run barrels. Dexter doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do. But he's taught Katie the most important lesson of all: you can't force a relationship with an animal. You have to earn it. Every single day.
Katie's dad — Chef Chris "Bub" Villa — brings 40 years of culinary discipline to the barn. Her mom Kim has been the steady hand behind everything for 23 years. Together, they've built something special: a family that works together, rides together, and believes that faith, family, and four-legged friends are the only things that really matter.
