Katie's Story

Katie Villa was born into horses. Not figuratively — literally. Before she could walk, she was being held in the saddle. Before she could read, she knew the difference between a trot and a lope. By the time she was old enough for school, she'd already spent more hours in a barn than most adults spend in a lifetime.

Now at 14, Katie is a competitive barrel racer with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from thousands of hours of real work. Not the kind of work you see on Instagram — the 5:30 AM kind. The muck-the-stalls-before-school kind. The ride-in-the-rain-because-the-horse-doesn't-care-about-weather kind.

"People ask me what I want to be when I grow up. I already am what I want to be. I'm a barrel racer. Everything else is just details."

— Katie Villa, age 14

She trains with four barrel horses on our family farm in Cullman County — each one different, each one teaching her something new. There's the veteran who teaches patience, the young one who teaches timing, the athlete who teaches speed, and the one who teaches her that some days you just have to trust the process.

And then there's Dexter the donkey. Dexter doesn't run barrels. Dexter doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do. But he's taught Katie the most important lesson of all: you can't force a relationship with an animal. You have to earn it. Every single day.

Katie's dad — Chef Chris "Bub" Villa — brings 40 years of culinary discipline to the barn. Her mom Kim has been the steady hand behind everything for 23 years. Together, they've built something special: a family that works together, rides together, and believes that faith, family, and four-legged friends are the only things that really matter.

This is Katie Grace Equine. Run hard. Turn fast. Trust deep.

Our Way

Training Philosophy

We don't train horses. We build partnerships. Every session starts with listening — to the horse, to the rider, to what the day is telling you. Speed comes from trust. Trust comes from consistency. Consistency comes from showing up every single day, even when it's cold, even when it's hard, even when you'd rather be anywhere else.

Trust First, Speed Second

A horse that trusts you will run through walls for you. We build that trust before we ever ask for speed.

Consistency Over Intensity

30 minutes of focused work every day beats 3 hours of chaos on the weekend. Every time.

The Horse Tells You

If you're listening, the horse will tell you what it needs. We teach riders to hear what their horse is saying.

Fail Forward

Bad runs happen. Knocked barrels happen. What matters is what you learn and how you come back.

Faith & Family

Everything we do is grounded in faith and family. The barn is our church on the days between Sundays.

Daily Life

A Day at the Farm

This is what it looks like when horses aren't a hobby — they're a way of life.

5:30 AM

Katie's alarm goes off. Boots on before eyes are fully open.

5:45 AM

Morning feed. Every horse gets their custom EquiChef nutrition program. Dexter gets whatever Dexter wants.

6:15 AM

Stall check, water top-off, and a quick grooming pass. The barn gets cleaned before school.

6:45 AM

Quick training session if there's time. Pattern work or just groundwork to start the day connected.

7:15 AM

Shower, breakfast, and off to school. But her mind's already planning the afternoon ride.

3:30 PM

School's out. Boots back on. Afternoon training session — this is where the real work happens.

5:00 PM

Cool down, grooming, and quality time. This is when the bond deepens.

5:30 PM

Evening feed. Check all water, hay, and supplements. Make sure everyone's settled for the night.

6:00 PM

Family dinner. Dad cooks (obviously). Talk about the day, plan tomorrow, and give thanks.
